Has anyone considered using steel cargo containers as a floatation base. Marine weld five containers side by side and then one across each end. This would give you a base platform of 40.5' w x 56.5' l x 9' h (w/concrete) . Weld wire to the exterior and coat with 3" of concrete. Using 100 cu ft = 1 GRT gives you a completed platform of 205 GRT. 7 of these containers (empty weight) would weigh 29.33 tons total.

Used cargo containers are easily available and look a lot less expensive than the cost of forms. (Anywhere between $900 & $1600 USD each)

The joining method you mentioned in another post would allow these bases to be expanded in area. As cargo containers are stack-able, multiple units (without concrete caps) connected could have stacked containers placed on the perimeter thus increasing total volume and tonnage.

Or am I missing something here? Please let me know what you think.

Lakeland,

Cargo containers do not last in marine ambient - a modular float based on cargo containers would sink by rust leaks within a year. The basic idea of taking a module and make a modular flat float is a good one, but the modules must have the capacity to swimm maintainence free in tropical ocean conditions for at least 200 years - only concrete shell and honeycomb structures have that capacity - all other structural building materials that are currently in use (included standard marine steel plating) don't have this capacity. You can not build a building or housing units on a base that does not last because the cost per squaremeter/year quickly turns prohibitive for any housing business plan.

You can work with steel in shipping and oil buisiness as you still have viable business plans if the structure only lasts a few years or needs to go thru a expensive maintenance shedule once a year - for housing applications this will not work.

A concrete honeycomb structure is a type of construction made up of hexagonal cells that resemble a beehive. These cells are formed by casting concrete into a mold made of hexagonal cells, resulting in a strong and durable structure with minimal material use. Need to check this https://mrdrains.co.uk/ and learn more new tips for unblocking repairs. The honeycomb structure is often used in bridge construction, as it is lightweight yet can support heavy loads. It can also be used in building construction, creating walls and floors with an aesthetically pleasing pattern.
