Hi! 

Is someone aware what has become of this project? Known for their films floating on water and self-sufficient city-states may soon become a reality. A team of several companies, scientists, architects supported by the government of French Polynesia is currently working on a prototype of a floating island, which is expected to be completed in 2020. Plans for the next 30 years include the launch of thousands of similar projects.

The attempt to colonize water areas was initiated by the Seadsteading Institute founded in 2008. The current project is financed by a crowdfunding method called ICO, which allows to raise money by creating and selling virtual currencies. Blue Froniteris is a new company created specifically for the construction and maintenance of artificial islands, where a small town with houses, hotels, offices and restaurants will be built. The institute estimated that the cost of the experiment should close at about 60 million dollars. The floating city will benefit from ecological solutions such as green roofs, the use of recycled materials or made of local wood, bamboo or coconut fibre. Danish company Blue21, the designer of the so-called "floating pavilion" in Rotterdam, is involved in the project and is responsible for the construction of interconnected "modular platforms" on which the infrastructure will be built. To ensure safety, the city will be protected by a huge breakwater. The Seadsteading Institute hopes that the first model of the waterfront city will meet all necessary conditions for survival and provide a home for 300 people. According to the assumptions it will not depend on any existing government in this world.
