With no natural light, hazards only appear when they come into range of the sub's lights. "The Johnston actually gave me a little bit of a surprise," Vescovo says. "We went around her and at the very back end of her, she actually had a pretty large piece of metal about 15ft long, jutting out at a right angle, and when you're in a submersible you can't see that well.
