While her blots might have, as TS Eliot writes in his 1936 poem Burnt Norton, "the look of flowers that are looked at", in truth they sought, generations before their time, to strip away the self-conscious pretence of settled shape, and instead to isolate the luminous energy that invigorates our perception of all things: colour.
