How do I know if my microwave is leaking radiation?
To know if your microwave is leaking radiation you can do a test with a NE-2 Lamp. Hold the NE-2 lamp by the leads and pass the bulb around the window and sealing areas of the microwave oven. The bulb should be touching the microwave oven to be as close as possible. All microwave ovens leak small amounts of radiation but it's the actual gaps in microwave seals that you are trying to find. Small leaks will not light the NE-2, but if the leak is large enough to ionize the gas inside the lamp, then it is large enough to cause concern. Using this little lamp is just a cheap and quick test and is not meant to replace a MW meter.
I stumbled upon this thread while looking for info on microwaves and radiation. Thanks for the tip on the NE-2 lamp test. I'll definitely give that a try. It's good to know that all microwaves leak some radiation, but it's the size of the leak that matters. And thanks for the heads up on signs that your microwave is going bad. I've had my microwave for about 5 years now, so I'm hoping it'll last a bit longer. By the way, I recently came across some info on the best emf protection clothing. It's crazy how much EMF radiation we're exposed to on a daily basis. I think it's important to take steps to protect ourselves from it. Anyway, thanks for the helpful info!
