Reading a book series out of order

Do you do this? I'm a big fan of charity shop book shopping, which means I often pick up titles from authors I like without knowing where they fit into a series, or sometimes even that they're part of one. Cadfael, Poirot, Marple, The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, Star Trek novels, and I'm sure many more are among the randoms I've picked up and devoured with no reference to where they're supposed to fit into a series. It does mean that characters sometimes marry partners, only to be newly dating them in the next book, get younger, rise from the dead, etc. 😆 But I don't mind, I enjoy trying to figure out what I missed and where things slot together. Plus you get to feel all sage and knowing when a plot point you know will be central later on is lightly hinted at in an "earlier" book. DH, however, thinks I am a monster and can't bare the thought of messing up the publishing order. So, WYOO?

I totally get you! Charity shop book hauls are the best. I've lost count of how many series I've stumbled into backward - from Poirot to Star Trek. Sure, characters' time travels through relationships, but it's like solving a literary puzzle. I love the feeling of connecting those plot dots across random books! You can find more such book recommendations on this site. Who else loves embracing the bookish chaos?
