How the Draupner Event shifted the engineering paradigmas

The Draupner New Year Event  made clear that steep breaking waves of 25m size  do occur in open ocean with a frequency of about 4 times a year in almost any location.

What was considered a seamen legend before is now documented.

Many structures are designed for a much modest design wave height.

Their survival in open ocean now must be considered a merley "lucky cooincidence" not having encountered such waves yet.

Unexplained ship disappearance with no glue and SOS call are seen in a new light now...

Research has confirmed that waves of up to 35 meters (115 ft) in height are much more common than mathematical probability theory would predict using a Rayleigh distribution of wave heights.[citation needed] In fact, they seem to occur in all of the world's oceans many times every year. This has caused a re-examination of the reasons for their existence, as well as reconsideration of the implications for ocean-going ship design.
