A circle and subsequently a sphere are the most efficient geometric forms found in nature. When a bubble forms it does so in a spherical manner because this particular shape allows a gas to encompass the greatest amount of space in the least amount of volume. Similarly, architecture in the shape of a sphere could make construction of homes and living spaces far more efficient than the cubic and rectangular structures that are so common today. This was the goal of Dries Kreijkamp who designed spherical houses in the late 70′s located in the Netherlands also called “Bolwoningen” in the Dutch language. This radical new design in architecture would orient the living space in a circular fashion so that all things within the living space are equidistant from each other and more readily accessible. Although this concept never gained popularity worldwide it is interesting to witness how using a more efficient geometric form in architecture would radically change the landscape of cities.
