Write a speech in Four simple steps

Writing a speech is an art and requires more than just knowing your way around words --- lucky for you it can be learnt.

While writing a speech for class can be extremely nerve-wracking, it also helps boost your confidence.

Before we start and learn the process of effective speech writing; it is important to understand the different types of speeches.

  • Conversational Tone

A mistake that students often make is that they write their speech similar to how they would write an essay or paper.

Remember, that although you are writing the speech, but the audience won’t read it --- they will hear it from you.

So write it in a conversational tone, focus on your body language and build the trust of your reader.

  • Touch all the main points in a logical flow

Prioritize your main points and talk about them accordingly. Know all the key points and repeat them for emphasis.

Clearly, state each of your main points and give additional information and evidence (statistics, facts, etc.)

  • Include transitions/links

Use transitions to maintain the flow of your speech and help the audience understand the connection between each point.

Don’t abruptly move on to the next point use the following transition words:

Before, after, then, next, secondly, in addition to that, in the following month, etc.

  • End with a call-to-action

Conclude your speech with a call-to-action, encourage the audience to find out more about the topic. Tell them how they can participate in finding out the solution to your mentioned problem.

  • Make it more engaging

To make your speech more encouraging for the audience make sure of the following:

Avoid long and complex sentences.

Opt for nouns rather than pronouns

Repeat keywords a few times

Go easy on the numbers and figures

Use visual aids

Practice and look for improvement

This was all you need to know for writing an effective speech. However, delivering the speech holds equal importance.

The best way to practice is reading your speech aloud and in front of family or friends.

Let us know how your speech went, was it a success?

You mentioned the basic four steps of not only writing a speech but also of other things like proposals, assignments, and essays! I provide the UK dissertation help to students. I try to be as relevant as possible, I mention my points logically and try to make it engaging and interesting. For me, the student who deserves a good grade is the one who keeps his work precise yet informative and interesting!
