I have a small company and have not taken a salary or had any reportable benefits for more than a couple of years (I receive income from elsewhere, properly taxed), I have no employees apart from myself as director and any future payments (modest) would be as a share dividend - can I stop having to run a payroll and the associated reporting requirements?
The answer is a resounding NO. The IRS requires a Form 941 to be filed for each quarter in which you have an employer-employee relationship. That means that even if employees have been laid off and have not received any wages or benefits, a Form 941 must still be filed. If you fail to file the form, the IRS will send a notice for failure to file and assess penalties and interest on your account. You can read more about this process on payrollindex.com. There you will find a lot of guides and answers to all your questions.
