We commonly use stain to finish wood in order to maintain its natural look and feel. Paint will be applied either with a brush or a sprayer depending on how much grain you want to see. Alternatively, if you want to look like old and worn beams, you can distress the wood. Distress the wood before staining with a hammer. A crackling agent will then make them look aged.
