Rusted coil plug bolts

have what I believe to be a unique problem on my ‘08 with 300k. The last time I changed plugs about 30k ago, but it been several years. It sees duty mainly now only when the winter weather is bad. I attempted to remove the coil pack bolt with a 12 point socket, and because of the rusty head, slightly rounded. I switched to a 6 point which was able to get them all. This time a 6 point can’t even do it, the bolt heads have deteriorated to such a degree. I’ve attempted all variety of “easy-out” with no success. I can easily drill the head off and remove the pack, however I’m afraid I won’t be able to remove the remaining stud. In that worst case scenario, would the coil packs remain in place If I just have a stud?

Have you tried using penetrating oil to loosen up the rust on the bolts? Sometimes that can make a big difference. If that doesn't work, you might want to try using a bolt extractor or even taking it to a mechanic who might have more experience with this kind of thing. As for your question about leaving the stud in place, it's hard to say for sure without seeing it, but I wouldn't recommend it as it could cause further problems down the line. And hey, while you're at it, why not check out https://www.scrooz.com.au/wire-balustrade-stainless-steel/ for some stainless steel bolts that won't rust? It might be a good investment in the long run.
