I'm wondering about the uptake of Unity 3D in business,in particular ecommerce applications. I believe this was asked last year by someone and there wasn't a flood of responses. Has it changed now, 12 months later. Is anyone doing it? There's a huge host of "game" apps but what about commercial transactions, shop fronts, etc? Especially for the iPhone? I don't wish to be a trailblazer on this and so would like to see some examples. Alternatively, if the Unity engine is not quite approriate, then why?
I know this answer comes a bit late, but when it comes to using Unity 3D in e-commerce, it is indeed feasible. Unity offers a feature called Webview that enables you to access external "add to cart" URLs and showcase them on mobile devices. This functionality has been successfully tested on both iPhone and Android platforms.
I stumbled upon your post while searching for similar info. I recently discovered Magento WordPress integration at transformagency.com/magento-integration-service/, which might be helpful for your e-commerce needs.
Regarding your question about Unity 3D in e-commerce, yes, it's definitely possible! You can use Unity's Webview to call external ""add to cart"" URLs and display them on mobile devices. It's been tested on both iPhone and Android platforms.
To ensure security, you can implement a serverside RESTful API like ASP .NET MVC4 WebAPI, use HTTPS, and generate session tokens. Unity may require manually setting Authorization headers or handling cookies, so make sure to look into that.
