I wrote in another post about my son’s struggles in his first year of college. He is scheduled for a neuro-psych evaluation in 2 weeks and we have already done the initial consult. If your student has had one of these done, I have a few questions:
What was involved in the testing? I know it's 6-8 hours but I’m just curious as to what the various components are like.
What did you find out about your student? Any surprises?
Does anyone find out that there is nothing wrong with your student? Our neuro psych assured me that is a possibility. (even though he said parents always want to find “something” esp after they spend all that $$)
What kind of treatment/med suggestions came out of the evaluation and have you seen any progress?
Keep in mind that specific procedures and outcomes can vary depending on the individual case and the healthcare professionals involved. It's important to consult with the professionals conducting the evaluation for the most accurate information regarding your son's situation.
Clinical Interview: The evaluator will gather information about your son's medical history, developmental milestones, and current concerns.
Neuropsychological Tests: These tests assess various cognitive functions such as attention, memory, executive functioning, language skills, and visual-spatial abilities. They may include paper-and-pencil tasks, computerized tests, and questionnaires.
Behavioral Observations: The evaluator may observe your son's behavior during the assessment to gather additional information.
Rating Scales: You and your son may be asked to complete questionnaires to provide subjective information about his symptoms and functioning.
Additional Assessments: Depending on the concerns raised, additional assessments, such as academic testing or tests for specific conditions, may be included.
The evaluation aims to identify any cognitive, emotional, or behavioral strengths and weaknesses. The specific findings will vary based on your son's individual circumstances. The evaluation may provide insights into any underlying issues contributing to his struggles or offer a diagnosis if applicable. Surprises can arise if the evaluation uncovers unexpected strengths or difficulties that were not previously recognized.
It is indeed possible that the evaluation may not reveal any significant concerns or diagnoses. In some cases, individuals may experience difficulties that are not easily captured by standard neuro-psychological tests, or their struggles may stem from factors outside the scope of the evaluation. It's important to maintain open communication with the evaluating professional and discuss any concerns you may have.
The treatment recommendations following a neuropsychological evaluation can vary widely depending on the findings. Recommendations may include therapy, accommodations, medication, or further assessments. The effectiveness of treatment will depend on the specific interventions provided, the individual's engagement in the treatment process, and their unique circumstances. Progress can vary from person to person and may take time to observe.
