Bolloré Group has ordered nine rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes for the Meridian Port Services Container Terminal in Tema, Ghana and Benin Container Terminal in Cotonou, Benin.

Konecranes will supply the cranes for an undisclosed sum.

Bolloré Group operates the Meridian Port Services (MPS) container terminal under a 20-year concession agreement with owners APM Terminals, with a 25-year concession deal also previously agreed for the Benin Container Terminal between Bolloré Group and the World Bank’s International Finance Group.

Konecranes sales director for port cranes in Western Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Antoine Bosquet, said: “This contract is a result of a long term relationship. Konecranes has already delivered 26 RTG cranes to container terminals operated by Bolloré Africa Logistics, the leading, private concessions operator in Africa.

“After the delivery to Tema and Cotonou, Konecranes will proudly have a fleet of 67 Konecranes RTGs in operation in West Africa.”

The all-electric, 16-wheel RTGs have a lifting capacity of 40t stacking one-over-five containers high and seven plus truck lane wide. The RTGs will feature a variable speed engine and fuel saver technology, along with an auto-steering feature that ensures the cranes run along a pre-programmed route. Konecranes said that the RTG container positioning system is also connected to the ports’ terminal operating system to allow real-time, accurate, container positioning and an accurate inventory. The RTGs are also equipped with remote access technology.
